Alamogordo, New Mexico, is the micropolitan center of the Tularosa Basin and the county seat of Otero County—the commercial and governmental center for the county. Holloman Air Force Base, the area's largest employer, is located near Alamogordo and is the current home of the 49th Wing with the future home of the F-16 Fighting Falcon , the German Air Force’s tactical training center, and the High Speed Test Track. White Sands Missile Range—the U.S. Army installation near Alamogordo—is the second largest overland testing range in the world. The installation was the birthplace of the U.S. rocket program in the 1940s. Today, White Sands Missile Range is the site for testing weapons systems and numerous Department of Defense research and evaluation programs.
