Education & Culture

Roosevelt County offers some of the best educational opportunities from preschool to graduate studies and a variety of continuing education opportunities. Besides Portales, there are public school districts with grades K-12 in the communities of Dora, Elida and Floyd.

The Portales Municipal School District offers a wide variety of academic programs while still maintaining individual attention to students and a low student/teacher ratio.

A private Christian school, Faith Triumphant School, offers exceptional educational programs.

Portales is home to the third-largest university in New Mexico, Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU). This friendly, four-year institution has an enrollment of approximately 5,000, an average class size of just over 22 and a student/faculty ratio of approximately 17:1. The small-campus atmosphere and the personal attention help to ensure the best educational experience for every student. The university offers a broad curriculum of vocational, technical and academic disciplines and is the center of the region’s cultural life. According to New Mexico’s Commission on Higher Education, ENMU is the most efficient of the state’s four-year universities in instruction and general expenditures per full-time equivalency students.

The College of Fine Arts has a full calendar of musical and dramatic programs, and the university is home to a local symphony orchestra. A variety of entertainment groups offer performances throughout the year, including the Faculty Jazz Band, along with a strong performing arts program. State-of-the-art conference facilities are available through the university, along with a full catering service to meet each individual need.
