Ideal Recreation Destination

bike riding

The combination of abundant sunshine, mild climate, mile-high elevation and proximity to the Gila National Forest make Silver City an ideal recreation destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Home of the annual Tour of the Gila bicycle stage race and Signal Peak Challenge mountain bike race, Grant County is something of a mecca for cyclists. There are hundreds of miles of single-track trails and lightly traveled alpine roads. Backpackers are also right at home (particularly if they enjoy the challenge of fly-fishing for native trout), as are hunters, rock climbers, birders, equestrians, rock hounds and astronomers.

Silver City also offers virtually year-round golfing on the city-owned championship 18-hole course, which is the site of many local tournaments as well as men’s, women’s and junior leagues. The tennis courts at Western New Mexico University and town swimming pools are open to the public, as is the Silver Consolidated School District all-weather track (a favorite location for morning walkers).

In short, if you are or you aren’t looking to be active, just simply taking in the “painted skies” of Grant County is worth the visit.
