Seniors enjoy the slower pace, active community and rural quality of life throughout Grant County. The temperate climate, abundant sunshine, blue skies and clean air energize the spirit, and the low humidity reduces, and often eliminates, old aches and pains. The rich social and cultural influences of the region’s Old Mexico heritage remain, even though it is more than 90 miles to the Border. The cost of living is reasonable with lower property taxes, no sales tax on groceries and many senior discounts offered throughout the community. Residential neighborhoods vary in architectural style, topography and price. Fifty-five and older condominiums, rental homes, and the tranquil communities of Tyrone and Hurley are especially popular with seniors.

Folks find they finally have the time to enjoy participating in the hobbies, clubs, community service, volunteerism, teaching/skill training, and personal growth (and perhaps part-time work) they have been yearning for. Opportunities such as the Grant County Archaeology and Gem and Mineral societies; Astronomy, Audubon, Hiking and Golf groups; Habitat for Humanity and Lions Club; Arts Council, Silver City Museum and hospital auxiliaries; and crafts, gardening, textiles and Western Institute for Lifelong Learning classes abound.

Local senior centers, fitness clubs, community walking tracks, swimming pools (both warm and cool options), and shopping are all easily accessible through the public Corre Cominos bus system, which offers Senior passes and regional transportation to Deming and Lordsburg for AmTrak connections. Airline service is available twice a day to and from Albuquerque at the Grant County Airport, while scheduled or on-demand shuttle vans can be arranged to the El Paso Airport.

Grant County Senior Services offers Medical Transportation for doctors and hospital appointments, Home Health Services, Meals On Wheels, Foster Grandparent, Senior Olympics, Senior Companion, and Retired Senior Volunteer Programs. In addition to quality healthcare in Silver City, satellite clinics, EMT service and ambulances are located in the outlying areas for immediate response, and Life Flight can transport emergency patients to specialty hospitals quickly.

There is always plenty to do in the evening with a variety of the civic, arts and culture events—whether it’s a live performance at the Fine Arts Center Theatre, an intimate dinner at one of the great local restaurants, catching a current movie, bowling, or just staying at home with friends and family. From sunrise to sunset, every day is fulfilling in Grant County!
