Finest Education

college campus

Western New Mexico University sits on top of a hill in Silver City. Views from the top stretch over downtown to the east and to the Pinos Altos Mountain Range to the north.

A drive into Silver City from the west brings a traveler views of the university to the right. Visitors coming in from the east or the south can spot the large red-tile-roofed buildings on the west side of town. The library tower sticks up above the Miller Library and is visible from many parts of the area.

Most of the university’s buildings lie between College Avenue and 12th Street on the south and north and West Street and E Street on the east and west.

Miller Library, housing books for research into the history of the area, and the University Museum, with a large collection of Mimbres pottery, can be accessed by 10th Street, off West Street on the east side of campus.

The Besse-Forward Global Resource Center has an auditorium that can seat several hundred participants and is regularly booked for symposiums and conferences, as well as public meetings for the community.

With seating up to 1,200, the Fine Arts Center Theatre hosts concerts and performances throughout the year. The McCray Art Gallery features changing exhibits for the art connoisseur. The Parotti Music Building has a small recital hall. The Webb Drama Building houses a small intimate theatre.

The Extended University includes the Deming Mimbres Valley Learning Center, the Truth or Consequences Garden Learning Center and the Gallup Graduate Studies Center, as well as a virtual college with online courses offered in collaboration with colleges and universities throughout the state.

Athletic events on campus include varsity football, basketball, cross country, softball, golf, tennis and volleyball teams, as well as a thriving intramural program.
