Western New Mexico University, in Silver City, sits on top of a hill and views from the top stretch over downtown to the east and to the Pinos Altos Mountain Range to the north.

Visitors coming in from the east or the south can spot the large red-tile-roofed buildings on the west side of town. The library tower sticks up above the Miller Library and is visible from many parts of the area. Most of the university’s buildings lie between College Avenue and 12th Street on the south and north, and West and E Streets on the east and west.

Miller Library houses the best books for research into the area’s history, and you can take a tour around the museum, located just on the east side of campus. The several hundred-seat auditorium in the Besse-Forward Global resource center is regularly booked for symposia and conferences, as well as public meetings for the community. The 1,200-seat Fine Arts Center Theater hosts concerts and performances throughout the year, while McCray Art Gallery features changing exhibits for the art connoisseur. The Parotti Music Building has a small recital hall and the Webb Drama Building houses a small intimate theater.

The Extended University includes the Deming Mimbres Valley Learning Center, the Truth or Consequences Garden Learning Center and the Gallup Graduate Studies Center, as well as a virtual college with online courses offered by colleges and universities throughout the state.

Athletic events on campus include: varsity football, basketball, cross-country, softball, golf, tennis and volleyball teams, as well as a thriving intramural program.
