Silver City is an ideal recreation destination for outdoor enthusiasts with its combination of abundant sunshine, mild climate, mile-high elevation and proximity to the Gila National Forest.
Grant County is something of a mecca for cyclists because it is home to the annual Tour of the Gila bicycle stage race and Signal Peak Challenge mountain bike race, offering hundreds of miles of single-track trails and lightly traveled alpine roads. Backpackers will also feel right at home (particularly if they enjoy the challenge of fly-fishing for native trout), as are hunters, rock climbers, birders, equestrians, rockhounds and astronomers.
Golfing on the city-owned 18-hole championship golf course is virtually year-round, which is the site of many local tournaments as well as men’s, women’s and junior leagues. Western New Mexico University offers tennis courts; town swimming pools are open to the public as well as the Silver Consolidated School District’s all-weather track, a favorite location for morning walkers.
In short, whether or not you’re looking to be active, just simply taking in the “painted skies” of Grant County is worth the visit.
