Business & Industry

graphicCortland County is home to more than 1,000 businesses, trade associations and corporations. It has a growing regional economy that has resulted in the annual average non-agricultural employment rate steadily increasing each of the last three years (1996-1998). Per capita income and total personal income, as well as earnings per person employed have increased overall.

Companies here have direct access to the Northeastern United States and Canada - the most affluent consumer markets in the world. Economic sectors include manufacturing, farming, and agribusiness. In addition, there are many companies that produce durable and non-durable goods, and many others active in wholesale and retail trade.

The Cortland Business Network is a consortium comprised of the CEO’s of top regional corporations, hospitals and educational institutions to act as a catalyst for economic growth. Recent legislation designating the county as a New York State Economic Development Zone combined with aggressive local and state financing incentives guarantees advantages to businesses here. Inexpensive real estate and labor costs, a prime telecommunications infrastructure, and custom training programs from world-class regional colleges and universities also benefit local businesses.
