Fun & Recreation

graphicCortland County is the gateway to the scenic Finger Lakes Region. Connections from the lakes to the canal system leading to the Great Lakes and Atlantic Ocean present a myriad of opportunities for boaters. In the winter, Greek Peak, Labrador Mountain and Song Mountain have some of the finest skiing in the East. Cross-country ski courses abound, along with great hunting in wooded areas and fishing in clear trout streams. Hiking and biking trails connect the county’s 30,000 acres of forestland.

The Carrier Dome, on the campus of Syracuse University, is one of the nation’s largest athletic facilities and host to many NCAA Division 1 teams. Fans also enjoy professional baseball in Syracuse and professional hockey in Binghamton.

Cortland County is a golfer’s delight, with dozens of great courses including Cortland Country Club, Elm Tree, Knickerbocker, Maple Hills, Walden Oaks and Willowbrook. The famous Robert Trent Jones course at Cornell University in Ithaca is one of the best in the nation.

The City of Cortland Parks and Recreation system is on par with those found in much larger communities. It operates four public parks and two public swimming areas - Wickwire Pool and the beach at Yaman Park. Dwyer Memorial Park at Little York Lake is maintained by the county and offers picnic areas, an amusement center, ball fields, fishing and a pavilion for special functions.
