The City of Cortland has begun extensive restoration to preserve the fine architecture of landmark buildings and to update storefronts. The Downtown Business District displays beautiful historical facades, period style street lamps, and unique shops and restaurants. Larger shopping centers are located at the edges of the city, and major metropolitan malls are nearby in Syracuse and Binghamton. The county is also noted for its affordable housing and spectacular Victorian, Italianate and Greek Revival architecture.
