Residents of Mount Vernon can rely on quality, dependable healthcare right in their own neighborhood. The Mount Vernon Hospital, a voluntary not-for profit general hospital serving Mount Vernon, the Pelhams, East Yonkers, New Rochelle and North Bronx boasts 150 beds and admits approximately 7,000 patients annually. The council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association approves residents in Medicine and Surgery. The Mount Vernon Hospital also has an affiliation with the New York Medical College through which students receive clinical training at the hospital. A variety of private medical specialists are available to the Mount Vernon community, including wound care, Hyperbaric Medicine, Surgery, Ophthalmology, Optometrists, and Podiatry. For those in need of quality extended care, the multi-faceted Wartburg Adult Care Community serves more than 600 adults. Located on a 35-acre campus, the complex includes the 240-bed Waltmade Health Care Center and Pavilion, the Marie Louise Heins Adult Resident, Lohman Village with 31 independent living cottages, Wartburg Church and the Outpatient Health Services Center. Programs include skilled nursing care, rehabilitation care, seven-day adult day services, assisted living and long-term and licensed home health care. Dortha Hopfer School of Nursing at the Mount Vernon hospital offers a 2-year Associate in Science Degree program leading to eligibility for licenser as a registered nurse.
