Sports Illustrated describes the historic racetrack in Saratoga Springs,
that has been in the hearts of horseracing fans since 1863, in the following
way: “... with its striped awnings, old wooden clubhouse and grandstand,
and paddock shaded by elms, Saratoga transports you back to the days when
people came to the races in surreys with the fringe on top.” They
still come by the thousands in late July and August to enjoy thoroughbred
racing at its finest. Saratoga Gaming and Raceway, also located in Saratoga
Springs, is open year-round for harness racing action, and visitors can
enjoy simulcasts, VLTs (video lottery terminals) and dining in a choice
of restaurants. Seven golf courses offer challenge and enjoyment to players
in Southern Saratoga County, water sports abound on both the Hudson and
Mohawk Rivers and local lakes, and hiking and biking trails can be found
throughout the county.
The Adirondack Park, New York State's six million acres of wilderness
(the largest in the contiguous United States), is less than an hour's
drive. The park provides a wealth of outdoor sports activities (including
hiking, canoeing and kayaking, world-class skiing and snowmobiling, boating,
camping, hunting and fishing), and is home to the famous Olympic Village
of Lake Placid. Vermont’s Green Mountains are less than a two-hour
drive away.
