The area code for most of Sullivan County is 845. Roscoe is served by the (607) area code.

Taxes

Real estate taxes vary from locality to locality. For specific tax rates, contact the town hall or one of our real estate specialists.

New York State residents are required to pay state income tax. Military personnel who are not New York residents are exempt, but dependents and/or spouses who are employed in New York State are required to file state income taxes.

Sales taxes are collected on most items of personal property including automobiles, boats and business equipment. Most items of food purchased in unprepared form are not subject to sales tax. Clothing and footwear costing less than $500 are exempt from state sales tax. The New York State sales tax is four percent with each locality assessing an additional amount. Sullivan County’s local rate is three percent.

Driver’s License and License Plates

When you move from another state, you have 30 days to get a New York State driver’s license. You must be 16 years of age to obtain a license.

Vehicles are also required to be titled and registered within 30 days of establishing residency. Automobile insurance is a requirement on all motor vehicles prior to registering and can be obtained at most of our local insurance agencies.

Vehicle Inspection

Vehicles registered in New York must have an annual safety inspection at any licensed service station, garage or motor vehicle dealer. The inspector will place a sticker in your vehicle, which must be displayed by law.

Voting

Completion of a voter registration form is required to vote in Sullivan County. Forms may be obtained at a local library, town hall, post office, school or from the Sullivan County Board of Elections. The Elections office is located on the second floor of the Sullivan County Government Center and can be reached at 845-794-3000 ext. 5024.
