For generations, Sullivan County has been a retreat for visitors looking to escape metropolitan life. Now those same people are retiring and are looking forward spending more time doing the activities they only could do in their spare time. A large percentage of Sullivan County natives who left as young adults are returning to buy second homes and/or retire. They know calm and beautiful surroundings, affordable housing and shopping, good medical facilities, personal security, appropriate recreation, abundant services and easy living are right here waiting for them. Matching the variety of reasons for retirement are the activities available to seniors. Most communities offer senior citizen groups that meet regularly and also offer trips and outings for members. This is an inexpensive way to meet others and further explore the offerings of Sullivan County. Many seniors are not ready to leave the workforce and are looking for a way to be a productive member of our community. The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) matches volunteers skills, interests and talents with community non-profit organizations, and offers RSVP insurance and mileage reimbursements. Popular programs include one-on-one tutoring in school classrooms, family budget counseling, and helping with income-tax preparation. The Senior Community Employment Program provides part-time employment for individuals 55 or older who meet low-income deadlines and want to continue to be part of the workforce. Sullivan County Community College (SCCC) understands the interest senior adults have in expanding their knowledge and education after retirement. Credit and non-credit courses are offered to those wanting to finish a degree or just for fun. SCCC is also a host site for Elderhostel, a network of 2000 educational and cultural sites. Elderhostel combines the best traditions of education and hostelling (informal, inexpensive lodgings) in a program designed exclusively for adults age 55 and older. Elderhostel is based on the belief that retirement does not mean withdrawal from meaningful activity, and that the later years should be viewed as an opportunity to enjoy new challenges. Todays retirees are active and Sullivan County gives them plenty of opportunities to keep busy. Sullivan County was recently ranked 30th in the publication "50 Fabulous Places To Retire In America" and the U.S. Department of Agriculture designated it as one of the three "rural retirement" counties in New York State. A full listing of offerings and services can be obtained by calling the Sullivan County Office for the Aging at 794-3000 ext. 5000.
