You’ve finally unpacked all of the boxes, and now it’s time to explore all of the wonderful activities your new community has to offer. Depending on your likes and mood, you could enjoy a new activity virtually every weekend for the next year and not exhaust the possibilities. Whether it’s an annual festival, a lively arts event or outdoor recreational activity, you need not search any further than your own backyard.

Tourism is the number one industry in Sullivan County. Sullivan County is recognized by outdoor enthusiasts– residents and visitors alike–as a sprawling playground with something for everyone.

Tens of thousands of acres of publicly-owned, accessible park land is available to hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and campers. Seventy-three lakes, rivers and streams allow most every freshwater sport imaginable. Of course, the best of what made the Catskills an old favorite remains in Sullivan County, with resort hotels offering all-inclusive packages and theme weekends at affordable rates. You will find top-notch trout fishing in the famous Beaverkill and Willowemoc rivers that meet at Junction Pool in Roscoe, 19 PGA-caliber golf courses with no waiting to tee off, outlet and antique shopping, kayaking, canoeing and rafting on the Delaware River, and a festival-packed summer.

For those who want to just watch the action, Monticello Raceway offers year-round harness horse racing. The more active can take flying lessons at one of our three airports: Wurtsboro, Monticello or Sullivan County International in Bethel. Wurtsboro also offers lessons in soaring. History buffs can also find plenty to excite them in Sullivan County. Mid-May marks the opening of Fort Delaware in Narrowsburg. Fort Delaware is an authentic Colonial-era settlement, complete with entertainers in period costume. In Livingston Manor, the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum offers a retrospective on the dry fly fishing heritage of the Catskills.

Five covered bridges, three stone-arch bridges, and the oldest standing example of a John Roebling bridge, the famed architect of the Brooklyn Bridge, make traveling around Sullivan County half the fun.

For a full listing of monthly events or to receive the official Sullivan County Travel Guide, contact the Sullivan County Visitors Association at 794-3000 ext. 5010. Each of the following organizations would also be happy to hear from you.
