There are two well respected children’s homes which each can trace its beginnings to the early 1900s. There is a 100 year old, four year liberal arts college, Lees McRae, which plays a major role in the town of Banner Elk. Mayland Community College serves not only Avery County, but attracts students from surrounding counties. The public school system has six primary schools, two middle schools, and a centrally located high school. Several of the schools have received outstanding recognition for the quality of their educational programs
