Pull up a lawn chair … Concerts in Kernersville are informal, festive events from the musical groups at the annual Spring Folly, to SummerFest’s beach music to the various Music at Twilight series sponsored by the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce.

On the big stage at the Spring Folly, a variety of national and regional groups entertain crowds who dance on the makeshift dance floor in the library parking lot. Others bring blankets and collapsible chairs to make a night out of the Friday and Saturday performances. The Dixie Chicks even played the year before their fame skyrocketed.

The Spring Folly takes place in the beginning of May each year. Downtown Kernersville is filled with booths of accomplished artisans featuring paintings, pottery, photography, woodworking, apparel, hand-blown glass treasures and other items. Children walk the streets with snow cones and cotton candy while turkey legs and funnel cakes promise delectable treats. It seems as if the entire town turns out for the Folly, a place where neighbors and friends gather under the spring sky for a weekend of relaxing enjoyment. Ranked as one of the top 20 May festivals by the Southeast Tourism Society, Kernersville residents put the Folly at the top of their list for annual events.

Summerfest

Looking for a night of summer family fun? The annual Summerfest extravaganza, hosted by the Kernersville Foundation, is held each June. Admission is free each night with beach music concerts playing for the community. All are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets and listen to groups like the Embers, the Craig Woolard Band and the Fantastic Shakers. Fireworks explode on Saturday night at Summerfest’s grand finale. Summerfest is held on the fields behind Kernersville Elementary School at 512 W. Mountain St.

Children of all ages enjoy the rides and games that Summerfest organizers book for each year’s event. A free petting zoo entices children to meet a new furry friend. Various food vendors selling barbeque, Mexican food, polish sausages, funnel cakes and ice cream are available for those who want to make Summerfest part of their dinner and dessert plans. Coolers and alcoholic beverages are not allowed at this family-centric event.

Entertainment

At each summer’s end, the Chamber of Commerce pairs with local churches to give families one last summer hurrah before the start of school. Typically the concerts are held on Thursdays in front of Town Hall. The final concert has become a grander-scale event in Harmon Park featuring Christian musical groups. Bubbles float overhead as children dip wands into soapy mixtures and blow over the volleyball court. A group of young boys bats a bright yellow ball back and forth over the net. Children take turns swinging and spinning wildly on the merry-go-round as the music plays.

Ley-yen Goh lives in High Point with her family but owns a Japanese restaurant in Kernersville. Goh says that the concerts are a nice way to spend their day off.

Outdoor concerts and festivals are not the only form of entertainment in Kernersville. A strong arts-based community, Kernersville has supported the arts, especially the dramatic arts, for decades.

Throughout the year, the Kernersville Little Theatre (KLT) presents several annual productions. From annual productions performed at the theatre at Kõrner’s Folly to the annual Christmas production held in church sanctuaries, the KLT has garnered quite a following for a volunteer-based organization that began in 1976 with a grant from the Urban Arts Council of Winston-Salem. From comedic plays like The Queen of Bingo to classics such as A Christmas Carol, the KLT offers plays that appeal to audiences of all ages.

Arts and entertainment are promoted in Kernersville, a town with two elements necessary for the creative arts: a dramatic flair and an audience eager to be captivated.
