Kernersville Location and Transportation

Getting Around

ariel view

Kernersville is the heart — the centrally located crossroads — of an extraordinary network of highways and freeways that feed the business markets of Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and High Point.

Like a heart, Kernersville has major arteries — Interstate and Business I-40 — that junction with other major arteries, such as NC 66. These are further connected to Interstates 77 and 85, U.S. Highways 311, 52, and 158 and State Highways 8, 65, 67, 109, and 150. This elaborate network not only enhances transportation locally, but also nationally.

“The Triad/Kernersville area is a strategic location that serves our network well in the north/south freight corridor that runs along the East Coast,” said John Hyre, Director of Investor and Public Relations for Roadway Express, Inc. Roadway is strategically centered between the Interstate-40 and Business-40 interchanges on Highway 66.

Seeing itself as a heart, Kernersville is very aggressive in maintaining the health and growth of its transportation network. In 2004, work was completed immediately east of Kernersville to add four additional lanes to I-40 and Business I-40 was recently upgraded between Kernersville and Winston-Salem.

Plans are also moving forward to construct the eastern-leg of the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway. Work is scheduled to begin as early as 2011. This new route will tie in US 52 south to I-40 Business, and I-40 Business south to US 311. As expected, this will connect directly into Kernersville. The eastern segment of the Beltway will become part of the proposed I-74 interstate system.

At the town level, Kernersville is served by two interchanges on I-40 and two on Business I-40. An additional interchange is scheduled to be constructed in 2011 at the intersection of Business I-40 and Macy Grove Road. Also, an airport connector is being considered to link Winston-Salem and the north side of Kernersville with the Piedmont International Airport in Greensboro. This would give Kernersville three direct routes to the airport in support of the Federal Express Hub that is slated to open in 2008-09.

Kernersville places a high priority on good transportation. In 1998, voters passed a $7 million bond issue. By the end of 2006, that $7 million in bonds, along with NCDOT and developer contributions has resulted in well over $12 million in road improvements and construction.

“Kernersville is very proactive on transportation issues,” said Public Works Director Tim Shields. “The town often partners with the DOT and private developers to fund roadway improvements. Kernersville and DOT have an excellent and longstanding relationship which seeks a win-win for all parties.”

With the arrival of Dell’s facility off Union Cross Road between I-40 and US 311, Kernersville will again benefit as the NCDOT plans to widen Union Cross Road from US 311 to Sedge Garden Road north of I-40 in 2008.

Kernersville is less than 15 minutes from the Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro. It is less than four hours (drive time) from the Atlantic Ocean ports. By means of wings, wheels, or water, Kernersville is within two hours of half the nation’s people.
