Kernersville shops at home because it’s home to virtually everything. Target, Wal-Mart, Starbuck’s, Lowes Home Improvement, Staples, Kohl’s, Rack Room Shoes, Petco — all of these and more — are right in town.
But equally important, Kernersville has a thriving downtown that is fun to explore and a treasure-trove of specialty shops and boutiques. Simply put, it is the jewel of Kernersville.
“I like things that are different, special, and unique,” said Terri Britt. “That’s why I shop downtown — it has those options.” She especially enjoys Muddpies, Designer’s Attic, and Elements Day Spa.
Regina Covington has always been a boutique shopper. “I love Foxy Lady because its carries upscale stylish clothing and when I wear it I won’t see myself in everyone else. And I love working with Barbara. She knows me so well, she knows what I’ll like before I get there,” said Covington.
Henrietta Barrett values personal service and a job well done. “I shop at Hedgecock’s Framing because Richard pays special attention to what I want and I always know that I will be satisfied.”
Richard Hedgecock, a local artist with a studio and framing shop, loves his downtown location. “I feel like a link in the chain that bridges the past and the future. At one time, all the shopping was done downtown — it was a necessity. Now, downtown shopping is a choice and a pleasure,” Hedgecock said.
Yes, downtown shopping, with its ample benches, flower gardens, brightly lit windows, spacious sidewalks, and shop keepers — that only a downtown can attract — will lift your spirits and set your mind along a new path of possibilities.
You might even consider living downtown. Many do — some in historic houses and townhouses that date from the 1800s. Others live in more traditional housing.
Aside from shopping, thousands of neighbors come downtown for community festivals and events. The Spring Folly Festival in May, Summerfest in June, parade and fireworks on the 4th of July, Honeybee Festival in September, Downtown Fall Festival in October, and then the traditional Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas events close out the year.
Most newcomers are drawn pretty quickly to the jewel of Kernersville — downtown. Come and see for yourself!
