Kernersville is committed to high quality healthcare and because of this each of the major healthcare providers in the Triad provides services within the town limits.
For some residents, it’s important that their doctors both live and work in Kernersville.
“My doctors live in Kernersville,” said Debra Berry, “and occasionally I see them when I’m out and about. I prefer for them to live locally because then I feel that they really want to be here and take care of me. Living here shows that they are not just committed to their job, they are committed to their community.”
Dr. Charles Record, who lives in Kernersville, joined his father and uncle at Forsyth Medical Center’s Kernersville Family Practice. “It’s more than just medicine. I know the families and the family dynamics and so it becomes more of family practice, rather than just treating an individual. I take care of grandparents, parents, children, and former teachers that I grew up admiring,” Record said.

George Repass is a patient at the newly opened Moses Cone Physician Specialty practice on NC 66. As principal of Bishop McGuinness High School, the proximity of the two buildings is perfect.
“For me, location is extremely important because it is difficult to schedule non-work hours for a doctor’s visit. I needed to see a back specialist and I’d heard good things about Dr. Bowen. I was seen on extremely short notice, was pleased with the outcome, and I’ll continue to go back,” said Repass.
Kernersville offers a wide selection of family doctors along with specialists for allergies, cardiology, pediatrics, women’s health, ear-nose-throat, neurology, orthopedics, and more.
Amy Sain, mother of two children with asthma, drives about 10 minutes from her house to Cornerstone Pediatrics in High Point.

“They are open eight to eight on weekdays and have shorter hours on Saturday and Sunday. And, they are accessible by telephone 24 hours a day. When you have kids with breathing problems, you need that kind of support. The doctor has even met me at the office in the middle of the night to help my children,” said Sain.
Sometimes emergencies happen and though Kernersville does not have its own hospital yet, Forsyth Medical Center (FMC) has proposed a new $84 million, 50-bed acute care hospital in Kernersville. Meantime, many residents use FMC PrimeCare for urgent care.
“I’ve used PrimeCare for years,” said Jeanette Paulson, “but what really impressed me was when I had a friend in from out-of-state and they helped her. She only had to wait 20 minutes from the time we walked in the door and they accepted her insurance and made it all so easy.”
Kernersville is also home to the Forsyth Medical Park Kernersville, a 25-acre medical campus. Here, Kernersville Family Practice, Forsyth Pediatric Associates, and Winston-Salem Cardiology, all affiliates of Forsyth Medical Center (FMC) are housed in modern and attractive redbrick buildings with the latest equipment. Martinat Outpatient Rehabilitation Center, which is also associated with FMC, offers a full range of physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and stroke rehabilitation.

When urgent care isn’t enough, Kernersville residents have four major hospitals to choose from. Hospitals are as close as 15 minutes. This is because Kernersville is the heart of the Triad and has a network of interstates and freeways that connect it to the largest acute-care hospitals in the area. There is even a hospital that specializes in children’s care.
“In the past, we took our young son to a hospital and he was treated like an adult. So when my baby girl was sick, I took her to Brenner’s Children’s Hospital in Baptist Hospital. The rooms are decorated especially for children and the equipment is child-sized and the nurses are wonderful,” said Melanie Carroll.
People seeking alternative medicine will be pleased to know that Kernersville is home to one of the most successful herb, vitamin, and mineral shops in North Carolina. Also available in town or close by are reflexology, iridology, massage, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, and more.
Kernersville is also highly interested in preventative care and the newest facility to support that is the Sportscenter Athletic Club (www.sportscenterathleticclub.com) which opens in the spring.

“I’m an old gym rat from D.C. and I used to be a competitive body builder — so I’ve been to some of the finest gyms in the country. The Sportscenter is my club of choice. It’s got an indoor track, an indoor and an outdoor pool with designated lap lanes, free weights, the latest machinery lifting, racquetball, aerobics, professional guest speakers, and then two things I’m that really mean a lot to me. The staff is extremely friendly and professional and the facility is immaculate,” said John Cerra. Currently, he uses the gym in High Point, but he’s looking forward to the new $14 million sister-facility due to open in Kernersville in the spring.
This gym is part of the High Point Wellness Center of Kernersville which also has clinical practices and a rehabilitation center.
