Kernersville Worship

Fostering Togetherness

wedding

From the first official welcome for newborns, to the joyful sanctification of newlyweds, to the sharing of sorrow for dearly departed ones — Kernersville’s 60-plus churches mark and measure life’s most precious moments.

In addition to this, churches are centers of community activity. It is just as natural for people to gather for chicken stews, barbeques, and spaghetti dinners at different churches, as it is for them to have dinner with their neighbors.

Churches are also the hub of volunteer work and actively reach out to people with disabilities, addiction problems, financial needs, and social needs.

In fact, Heather Camp, director of The Shepherd’s Center in Kernersville said that of the 480 volunteers at the center, 98 percent of them come from the churches.

“Our churches are our backbone,” said Camp.

This “community backbone” is extremely diverse. A sampling of faiths include Baha’i, Baptist, Catholic, Church of Christ, Inter-denominational, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Lutheran, Methodist, Moravian, Mormon, Non-denominational, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, Quaker, Seventh Day Adventists and Wesleyan. Many churches have Spanish and English services. Also, there are a wide range of services offered in both traditional and contemporary worship, alternative weeknight services, contemporary music, and youth group programs.

While there are many different churches, they often work together. The Kernersville Chamber of Commerce brings churches together for Christian music at the Spring Folly and Music at Twilight. The Chamber also hosts a “Concert in the Park” — a family Christian festival — with craft projects, inflatable playground equipment, and all Christian music.

Civic clubs and non-profits also join forces regularly to work for the greater good of Kernersville. For instance, in 2006, the Lion’s Club, Kiwanis, Rotary, and the YMCA raised enough funds to buy school supplies and shoes for 80 children in need.

A sampling of clubs include the American Business Women’s Club, Kernersville Garden Club, Kernersville Cares for Kids, the Kernersville Civitans, Newcomers Club, Exchange Club, Mom’s Club, and the Friends of the Library.

Seniors are particularly active in Kernersville. Many volunteer at The Shepherd’s Center to help those less fortunate than themselves. They help with meals-on-wheels, telephone check-in, and transportation for older adults and adults with disabilities. The Shepherd’s Center also sponsors the fully accredited Senior Enrichment Center. Here, people over 50 can learn a foreign language, take computer classes, practice aerobics or Tai Chi, learn a new dance, or take an extended trip.

Weekly updates on church, civic, and social activities are printed in the Thursday edition of the Kernersville News or available though the Chamber of Commerce.
