The Coventry Township community—population 11,280—is blessed with an abundance of natural landmarks in its 9.8 square miles. Surrounded by the lakes that comprise the Portage Lakes State Park, water sports and lake home living dominates the culture. Our six parks also provide softball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, walking paths, shuffleboard courts, football fields, nature trails, ice skating opportunities, kite flying, sled riding and a bird sanctuary. Organized sports events for youth abound.

However, academics come first in our school system: of the 208 graduates in the class of 2000, 52 percent enrolled in 4-year colleges, 18 percent enrolled in 2-year colleges and 7 percent joined the armed forces. We awarded 26 honors diplomas and 40 College Prep Awards of Merit to these students.

We credit our divided campuses for the individual attention that allows these 2,400 students to excel. A primary school houses pre-K through first grade, two elementary schools handle grades 2 through 4; the middle school covers grades 5 through 7. Eighth and ninth graders attend classes at the junior high, and grades 10 through 12 meet at the high school campus. The high school includes a former entertainment complex that the school board renovated in 1994 to include a performing arts center, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a fitness center and a bowling alley. The high school is also split into a north and south campus, with college-credit and vocational programs in one section and a more traditional curriculum at the other.

Thanks to our open enrollment policy, students from Springfield, Manchester, Barberton and Green elect to attend classes in our system.

Coventry was the first township in the country to stop annexation by creating and adopting a joint economic development district with Akron.
