Toledo is a city of business, culture and education, rich in diversity and community. Located in northwest Ohio, Toledo is situated along Lake Erie and bisected by the Maumee River. More than 601,000 people call the Toledo metropolitan area home — giving the region all the attributes of a large cosmopolitan area, but still retaining the advantages of small-town atmosphere and charm. The Toledo MSA area includes Lucas, Fulton, Wood and Ottawa counties.
A region is only as strong as its urban center, and Toledo's downtown revitalization is a work in progress — with many successes. Fifth Third Field, home of the Toledo Mud Hens, continues to break attendance records since its opening in 2001. Downtown housing development continues to grow and flourish, and a revitalized warehouse district with new retail and entertainment venues is changing the complexion of Toledo. New restaurants and pubs continue to grow, drawing thousands of people to downtown.
Toledo is the region's center for medical research and technology, while the surrounding area presents an array of outstanding hospitals and health care centers. This collection of health care providers in Toledo services clients from as far north as Detroit and as far east as Cleveland. The merger of the University of Toledo and the Medical University of Ohio in 2006 has created a highly accredited university and medical school that has gained national recognition.
The Toledo area, with its rich diversity of people, boasts a nationally recognized zoo, a world-class art museum (which recently opened the new Glass Pavilion addition), a symphony orchestra, opera, ballet, theater groups, and a wide variety of neighborhood and ethnic festivals. An abundance of outdoor recreation and sports — including the Metroparks system — is also available on the area's lakes and rivers. With its close proximity to the Lake Erie Islands and Cedar Point, Toledo is a natural destination point for summer recreation. Toledo is also home to the Mud Hens Triple A minor league baseball team and the annual Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic, presented by Kroger, LPGA Golf Tournament.
Toledo is a crossroads community with big-city ideas and small-town manners. These catchwords make Toledo attractive: Jeep, Mud Hens, Tony Packo's hot dogs, Lake Erie walleye fishing, the Toledo Zoo, and the Toledo Museum of Art. But aside from these amenities, the city is home to far more important resources like clean water, affordable living, and friendly people. To those who live here, these resources are the ones that make Toledo a highly desirable place to live.
