Wright Patterson is unique among Department of Defense facilities. It is the largest Air Force base in the nation. It pumps about $1.2 billion into the area economy annually, employing one out of every 12 area workers. The base is home to the second largest Air Force medical centers in the nation. And, it is home to the Hope Hotel and Conference Center, the only commercial hotel on a U.S. military installation that is privately operated and not subsidized by the government. The Hope Hotel and Conference Center maintains a 75 percent occupancy rate in its 266 rooms, serving about 79,800 guests per year. When it opened in 1990, the hotel was designed to house students who came to the base for training. Today, the hotel and conference center caters to wedding receptions, military reunions, holiday celebrations, private parties, and business conferences. The conference center can accommodate from 10 to 1,000 persons. In addition, it has a full-service restaurant and lounge. Each of the eight communities surrounding the base is unique as well. Dayton is of course the largest of the eight, with a population in excess of 500,000. The population count of each of the others is:
Recreation opportunities abound in municipal and county parks, municipal recreation centers, and in nearby state parks. Several communities have little theatre groups and municipal bands and all have easy access to metropolitan Dayton's cultural and entertainment assets. The area is rich in education, everything from award winning public and private school systems to institutions like Wright State University. High quality health care is easily accessed in facilities such as Greene Memorial Hospital, Kettering Memorial Hospital, Miami Valley Hospital, and Good Samaritan Hospital. The area is replete with transportation assets. Interstate Highways 70, 75, and 675 wrap the area. These highways, along with US Route 35 and State Routes 444, 835, 235, 201, 202, and 4, connect the eight communities to Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Several more major roadways crisscross the region, adding further links between communities. Dayton International Airport is situated on 3,700 acres to the north of I-70, between Englewood and Vandalia. It is served by 17 airlines which make 81 flights per day and carry more than two million passengers annually. Two air freight carriers also serve the airport. Private and corporate aircraft are based at Greene County Airport which boasts a 4,000-foot paved and lighted runway. Larger aircraft are based at nearby Springfield Municipal Airport, which has a 9,000-foot runway. More than three dozen motor freight carriers serve the area's business and industry. Conrail and CSX railroads serve Vandalia, Dayton, and suburban communities in the southwest part of the area.

Dayton,
Ohio, and the communities surrounding it are heavily impacted by the
presence of Wright Patterson Air Force Base, "the birthplace, home,
and future of aerospace." In 1903, Daytonians Wilbur and Orville Wright
showed the world that human flight was possible and practical. Eight
communities are most affected by Wright Patterson's presence. They
are the City of Dayton and its suburbs Englewood, Vandalia, Huber
Heights, Fairborn, Xenia, Beavercreek, and Kettering.
