The people of Corvallis are truly dedicated to the concept of community livability, the factors that make a town the kind of place where people want to live. Our town is beautifully situated in the Willamette Valley on the eastern edge of the Coast Range. Scenic vistas, a mild climate, and close proximity to outdoor recreation facilities make Corvallis an ideal home for nature lovers and sports enthusiasts. Open space, parks, extensive bicycle trails and routes give the town a very unique character and make it accessible to all forms of personal transportation.

Livability is in the eye of the beholder and requires more than just pretty views and bike paths. Fortunately, Corvallis offers many things to those whose idea of livability is more cosmopolitan. The college town atmosphere and an economy rooted in education, high-tech industries, and healthcarecontribute to a community spirit of entrepreneurism, experimentation, and respect for diversity. Corvallisites have big ideas and aren’t afraid of the quirky and unique.

The arts—from folk arts to cutting edge fine arts—flourish under the patronage and involvement of the community. A growing cadre of entertainment entrepreneurs is helping to nurture and build a thriving music scene and independent film community. Local visual artists and artisans abound and find support and venues through ArtCentric, the Corvallis Art Guild, and many other organizations. The Majestic Theater provides classes and a training program in the performing arts. Thriving Theater, an independent theater troupe, produces cutting edge performances in an off-off-off Broadway setting. Additionally, Oregon State University Theater Arts offers top-notch productions throughout the academic year, and members of the community are invited to audition for plays on campus.

While Corvallis has a budding cosmopolitan urbanity, it also maintains the character of a small town. From quiet neighborhoods to friendly commercial districts, this is a community where it’s hard to stay a ‘stranger.’ The town is anchored by five retail districts, and is centered on a beautiful downtown. The focal point for the community is emerging along the Willamette River at the Riverfront Park. This wonderful feature adds to the charm of downtown, which itself is the pride and joy of Corvallis. Here, as well as in our other retail districts, you will find restaurants and entertainment venues opening on a regular basis, and locally owned, unique destination businesses thriving. Variety, opportunity, charm and friendliness—these are the characteristics that make Corvallis a livable community.
