HERMISTON SCHOOL DISTRICT
The Hermiston School District is the largest public school district in Eastern Oregon. It serves approximately 5,200 students in grades kindergarten through 12 with rigorous program choices and a wide variety of extracurricular offerings. Educational programming includes a comprehensive core curriculum with science, technology, mathematics and the arts infused at every level; a wide array of career and technical opportunities; and the largest selection of dual credit and advanced placement courses in eastern Oregon. Hermiston School District is known for its highly competitive athletic programs and award winning co-curricular offerings.
The District includes one comprehensive 9-12 senior high school, two 6-8 middle schools, five K-5 elementary schools, an alternative learning program, and a K-12 online school. Hermiston Online was launched in the fall of 2012. It is a district-sanctioned, academically rigorous, online learning option for Hermiston area students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Hermiston Online provides students an opportunity to receive their education in a nontraditional environment and offers personalized learning and support. Regular face-to-face consultation, guidance, and advising are also provided.
Community support for the Hermiston School District remains strong. In 2001, voters approved a $39 million building program, which included the renovation and expansion of Hermiston High School, a new elementary school - Desert View Elementary School, and renovations at Highland Hills Elementary School. In 2008, voters approved a $69.9 million bond to replace Armand Larive Middle School (built in 1936), West Park Elementary School (built in 1950), and Sunset Elementary School (built in 1957). Safety, security, and technology upgrades were also made to all schools.
Hermiston School District is the fourth largest employer in the city of Hermiston, with over 250 licensed teachers, 170 support staff, and 15 administrators on staff. The district serves over 30,000 residents of Hermiston and surrounding communities.
