Its position in northern Umatilla County places it within minutes of the Oregon-Washington state line and just 10 miles south of Walla Walla, WA.

The average January temperature is 29 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average July temperature is 89 degrees Fahrenheit. Average rainfall is 14.43 inches, with 55 percent falling between the months of November and March (10 percent is snowfall). During the winter months, deep snows are found in the Blue Mountains, just a short distance to the east. The elevation of Milton-Freewater is 1,071 feet. Growing season is May through October.
