The city of Milton-Freewater encompasses 53 acres of parkland and several outstanding facilities for use by residents and visitors to the area. The largest of the city’s three parks, Yantis Park is spotted with stately trees, which provide plenty of shade for picnickers. The park also encompasses a meandering walking trail along the hillside, three shelters, a Little League field, the Legion baseball field, tennis and racquetball courts and a bandshell that hosts summer concerts and live entertainment during the Muddy Frogwater Country Classic Festival. Freewater Park in Old Town Freewater and the quaint Orchard Park make up the city’s other great park sites.

The Joe Humbert Family Aquatic Center (situated on the northern part of Yantis Park), Mel Bennett Memorial Tennis Courts, the Milton-Freewater Skatepark at Freewater Park and a 4.5-acre Sports Complex featuring baseball, softball and soccer fields are among the favorites in the community.

Located 14 miles southeast of the community, Harris Park sits along the South Fork of the Walla Walla River, offering visitors plenty of options for outdoor diversions. The park is owned and operated by Umatilla County and is open from early spring through late fall. An extensive, rugged hiking trail winds through the park, affording hikers with beautiful views of nature in the Valley.

The park is equipped with the Gene Palmer Campground, an area that is designated for overnight camping use only. The campground houses 26 campsites — two handicap accessible sites and four campsites along the river — each equipped with water, electricity, a picnic table and a fire/grill ring. All sites are capable of accommodating an RV and one car, with some having additional space for larger RVs. Tent sites lodge up to four people and one car. The campground also boasts public restrooms, a large covered shelter (Widner Cove), a sand volleyball court and a storage shed for campfire wood.

Harris Park also includes the Miller Day Use Area, which is free for public use. A shaded area along the river offers a great spot for picnicking, as it provides picnic tables and raised grills for barbequing. There is a small shelter for picnicking as well. A playground, horseshoe pits and a sand volleyball court are also accessible to day use guests.

GOLF

Added to the list of exceptional recreational opportunities is the 18-hole Milton-Freewater Municipal Golf Course. This executive course is surrounded by vistas of the winsome Walla Walla Valley and offers a challenge to golfers of all skill levels. Novice players and experienced golfers alike take pleasure in the amenities of this course, which is characterized by par 3 and par 4 holes. While play is first come, first served Mondays through Thursdays, tee times are required Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
