Recreational opportunities flourish in Eastern Montgomery County. Every type of outdoor activity you can imagine, from boating and fishing to golfing and hiking, are all right here. Parks abound, as do great museums and blooming gardens.

For the sports fan Philadelphia is major league in every major spectator sport, with teams such as the 76ers (NBA), Eagles (NFL), Phillies (MLB), Flyers (NHL), Phantoms (AHL), KiXX (MISL) and Soul (AFL) all calling Philadelphia home. The area is also a mecca for collegiate basketball, football, rowing and track and field.

Abington YMCA The facility, which is composed of a swimming pool, fitness center, gymnastics center, aerobics center, teen center, child care center and a gym, offers a variety of programs and services ranging from adult and youth sports leagues and fitness classes to aquatics and summer camps.

Alverthorpe Park This multifaceted park is a popular spot for area residents year-round. Patrons can play a round of golf at the park’s Par 3 course, romp on the playground or jump on the courts for a game of tennis or basketball. Additional activities that can be found throughout the warmer months of the year include fishing on Alverthorpe Lake, swimming at the Wading Pool, camping and picnicking.

Briar Bush Nature Center Stretching over 12 acres of land, the Briar Bush Nature Center is comprised of winding trails, a windmill-fed pond, the Griscom Bird Observatory, gardens of local wildflowers, woodlands and meadows. The center’s extensive museum houses a replicated Pennsylvania crawl-through cave, interactive displays, live animal exhibits, an observation beehive, an informational reference library, an indoor pond, the Children’s Reading Hollow and the Discovery Den. What’s more, the nature center is host to a multitude of programs and events.

Curtis Arboretum The Curtis Arboretum spans 45 acres, encompassing Curtis Hall, which was once a music room in the opulent Curtis estate. Visitors can access beautiful rolling hills, two ponds and more than 50 species of trees here. Located in Wyncote, Curtis Arboretum is now operated by the Cheltenham Township Parks and Recreation Department.

Lorimer Park Lorimer Park is a 250-acre oasis of greenery amid urbanized Abington Township. A bestowal from George Horace Lorimer, the park boasts a natural wildlife sanctuary and a number of exotic tree species. Popular pastimes at Lorimer Park include hiking, horseback riding, picnicking and bird and animal watching, with sledding and cross-country skiing rounding out the favorite winter activities.

For the golfer, Eastern Montgomery is simply unparalleled. Montgomery County has more golf courses per square mile than any county in America. It is truly a golfer’s paradise!

Huntingdon Valley Country Club Opened in 1897, the Huntingdon Valley Country Club boasts a family-oriented club lifestyle that, in addition to the great golf found here, offers such activities as tennis, squash, paddle tennis, swimming and shooting. The club has also established a modern fitness center.

Manufacturers’ Golf and Country Club Established more than a century ago, the Manufacturers’ Golf and Country Club stretches over 250 acres and provides a beautifully-manicured, 6,707-acre course that has twice been recognized among “America’s 100 Best Classical Courses” by Golf Week. The course was originally founded by a group of industrial leaders, mostly from the textile manufacturing industry — thus the moniker. Patrons can also access pool and tennis facilities.

Talamore Country Club Upon its opening in 1995, Talamore Country Club was ranked 11th Best New Private Course in the Country, followed by the ranking of Top 24 a few years later, as ranked by Golf Digest. The club’s 18-hole championship golf course is great for players of all skill levels, and members can also access a modern fitness center, tennis courts and a swimming pool.
