Education

A testament to the quality of life found in this Pennsylvania region is Abington’s recognition among Money magazine’s Best Places to Live (2008), as well as its naming among the 100 Best Communities for Young People by America’s Promise (2008). Included in the attributing factors of these acknowledgements are the outstanding schools located in and around the area. From early childhood education and primary schools to secondary education and higher learning institutions, the communities of Eastern Montgomery County have access to it all.

The suburban school system serving the area is impressive, featuring award-winning schools, a challenging curriculum and plenty of opportunities for personal enrichment through a variety of extracurricular activities. Recognized as one of the top school districts in Pennsylvania, and cited as one of the Top 100 Districts in the U.S. in “towns you can afford” (Money Magazine), Abington School District is an exceptional resource for K-12 education. Additionally, Abington Senior High School’s recognition as a National Service Learning School by the White House exhibits its dedication to excellence in teaching and community service.

The district, which enrolls more than 7,400 students, is composed of seven elementary schools, one junior high school and one senior high school — of which several have garnered acknowledgement as National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence (Abington Senior High School, Abington Junior High School, plus McKinley, Overlook, Roslyn and Rydal Elementary Schools). Students and faculty regularly earn awards and recognition as well.

More than $6 million has been invested in technology enhancement and improvement at all levels, and all of the district’s facilities have undergone recent renovation and infrastructure updating.

Parents and students searching for a high-quality alternative to the traditional public school route are impressed with the assortment of private, parochial and charter institutions established in Eastern Montgomery County.

The Meadowbrook School has been a significant private education resource in the county since 1919. The award- winning facility provides top-notch learning environments for students enrolled in prekindergarten through 6th grade.

Founded in 1697, Abington Friends School (AFS) hails as the oldest primary and secondary educational facility in the country to continuously operate under the same management within its original location. AFS is a Quaker, coeducational college-preparatory day school serving students from preschool through 12th grade.

The Academy of the New Church and Bishop McDevitt High School are prime choices for private secondary education, while the Center School is available for students in need of specialized learning programs.

Graduating seniors choosing to continue on the path to higher learning are afforded a number of outstanding local two- and four-year colleges and universities. A host of excellent degree programs are available through Penn State Abington, Arcadia University in Glenside, Temple University-Ambler, the Fort Washington campus of Gwynedd-Mercy College, DeVry University in Fort Washington and Manor College in Jenkintown. Montgomery County Community College operates two campuses — in Blue Bell and Pottstown — as well as off-site learning sites at the Willow Grove Naval Air Station and in Lansdale. County residents also have access to Rosemont College and a long list of highly acclaimed two-year and four-year higher learning institutions, including Saint Joseph’s University, located in nearby Philadelphia.
