

The suburban school system in the area offers many options for families interested in both public and private education. Eastern Montgomery County is home to many award-winning educational institutions with the majority of students pursuing higher education upon graduation.
Residents of the area enjoy an educational system that has earned a national reputation for excellence over the years. Abington School District, which includes Abington Township and the Borough of Rockledge, has seven elementary schools, one junior high school and one senior high school serving a total of 7,444 students in the 2007-2008 school year. All the district’s facilities have been recently renovated or updated, greatly improving the overall quality of educational offerings.

National Blue Ribbon Excellence Awards have been recently presented to Abington Senior High School, Abington Junior High School, McKinley, Overlook, Roslyn and Rydal Elementary schools, with Pennsylvania Blue Ribbon School of Distinction awards granted to McKinley, Overlook, Roslyn and Rydal Elementary schools. What’s more, Abington High School has been chosen as one of the top 100 school districts in the U.S. by Money Magazine. And its recognition as a National Service Learning School by the White House is evidence of its caliber of outstanding teaching and community service.
Alternatives to the public school system are available within the county, with such institutions as the Abington Friends School and Meadowbrook School. Founded in 1697, making it the oldest primary and secondary educational facility in the country to continuously run under the same management at the same locale, Abington Friends School is a coeducational, college preparatory day school founded upon the Quaker principle that there is “that of God” in every person.

Situated on 18 acres, the institution serves students from preschool through 12th grade and boasts a strong college placement record, with many students attending some of the most esteemed colleges and universities.
The Meadowbrook School was established in 1919 and sits upon a beautiful 20-acre campus. Serving as a pre-K through sixth grade coeducational day school, the Meadowbrook School is an institution of many longstanding traditions that has received a wealth of accolades over the years, including Favorite Private School, K-6, and Reader’s Choice Award by Montgomery Newspapers.
In addition to undergraduate training, this area is “university rich.” The northern suburbs boast outstanding two- and four-year colleges and universities with reputations of excellence.

Situated on 45 acres in Abington, Penn State Abington provides 3,250 full- and part-time students with the excellent education of a distinguished higher educational institution. PSA offers students 15 baccalaureate programs that range from Art, English, Biology and Business to History, Information Sciences and Technology and Psychological and Social Sciences, along with two associate degree programs in Business Administration and Letters, Arts and Sciences.
Arcadia University, located in Glenside, is a private university offering its 3,700-student population a wide variety of liberal arts and professional courses. Undergraduates can choose from more than 65 fields of study, while graduate students are provided with master’s degree programs in 15 fields and doctoral degree programs in Physical Therapy and Special Education.

Stretching over 187 acres, Temple University-Ambler provides its student base of 3,867 full- and part-time students with 13 certificate programs, 21 bachelor’s degree programs, one associate’s degree program and seven master’s degree programs. More than 30 student organizations are available on the campus, along with four NCAA Division I athletic teams including men’s soccer, women’s soccer, baseball and softball.
The Fort Washington Campus of Gwynedd-Mercy College provides students with majors in more than 40 programs and has been listed among the best master’s level colleges and universities in the north region by U.S. News and World Report.

Designed to prepare students for transfer to a four-year college or university or for entry into the workforce, Montgomery County Community College offers 90 degree and certificate programs in 40 areas of study. Students can obtain four associate’s degrees here — AA, AS, AAS and AGS. MCCC’s Central Campus is located in Blue Bell, while its West Campus is positioned in Pottstown. The college also provides courses at off- campus sites including the Willow Grove Naval Air Station and Lansdale, as well as e-learning opportunities.
Established in 1947 by the Byzantine Ukrainian Sisters of Saint Basil the Great, Manor College is a private, coeducational college that supplies students with a multitude of certificate and associate’s degree programs, allowing students for easy transfer to a four-year college or employment.

Located in nearby Rosemont, Rosemont College is a private, liberal arts institution that currently enrolls 400 students on its beautiful 56-acre campus. Rosemont College, founded in 1921, stands as one college with three schools — the Undergraduate Women’s College for women only and the School of Graduate Studies and the School of Professional Studies offered to both women and men.
Residents of the area also have quick access to the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, DeVry University and a wealth of other two-year and four-year institutions of higher learning located in nearby Philadelphia.
