With the establishment of award-winning hospitals, specialty clinics, private practices and well-equipped fitness centers, Eastern Montgomery County residents have easy access to medical resources needed in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Abington Memorial Hospital (AMH) has been a leading source for healthcare since opening in May 1914. The 570-bed facility delivers comprehensive medical services to its patient base in Montgomery, Bucks and Philadelphia counties, and has secured designation as a regional referral center and teaching hospital. In addition to these earmarkings, AMH has earned distinction as a Magnet-designated hospital. First designated in 2003 and again designated in 2008, AMH was recently awarded the Magnet Prize for its Daily CARE Plan — an accolade given to one Magnet hospital each year by the American Nursing Credentialing Center.

A roster of more than 5,500 employees, including 900-plus physicians, makes up the staff of AMH — making it one of the county’s largest employers. Supplementing the hospital staff are more than 1,100 volunteers who dedicate their time and skills in order to support the hospital.

AMH is equipped with the only Level II Trauma Center in the county and is a prime regional referral center for cancer care, cardiac care and surgery in the areas of orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery. Distinguished centers of excellence found through AMH include the Pilla Heart Center, the Rosenfeld Cancer Center, the Human Motion Institute, the Neurosciences Institute and the Muller Center for Senior Health. Each year the hospital receives about 44,000 inpatient admissions and more than 500,000 outpatient visits.

As a teaching hospital, AMH currently sponsors five outstanding residency programs for physicians in the fields of family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, general surgery and dentistry. The hospital operates the AMH Dixon School of Nursing and the Radiologic Technology and Nuclear Medicine Technology programs, as well as a range of health education classes, health screenings, support groups and further informational resources.

In addition to the main hospital campus, AMH operates several comprehensive outpatient facilities in the region, including Abington Memorial Health Center’s Schilling Campus in Willow Grove, Abington Memorial Health Center’s Warminster Campus in Bucks County and Abington Physicians at Montgomeryville in North Wales.

The hospital’s latest news is the acquisition of Lansdale Hospital (formerly Central Montgomery Medical Center). The newly procured acute-care hospital features 125 beds, a 24-hour emergency department, a 13-bed acute rehabilitation unit, a sleep care unit and a wound care center staffed by more than 700 employees and over 300 active physicians. Plans are underway to expand the hospital’s surgical services, increase the inpatient services and enhance the outpatient services.

Part of Holy Redeemer Health System, Holy Redeemer Hospital and Medical Center has contributed to the health and well-being of the area for 50 years. The 244-bed hospital, located in Meadowbrook, is equipped with more than 300 knowledgeable physicians and supplies a full scope of acute, ambulatory and emergency services. Notably, Holy Redeemer excels in the areas of cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, obstetrics, pediatrics, diagnostics and rehabilitation. In fact, the hospital has earned certification as a Primary Stroke Center and accreditation as a Community Cancer Center with commendation.

Living a healthy lifestyle is supported by an array of full-service health clubs in the area. Noted fitness and recreation centers include the Abington-based YMCA, the Aquatic & Fitness Center and Healthrough Action in Elkins Park. Through these facilities members can access all one needs to stay fit, from advanced cardiovascular and strength-training equipment and gymnasium space for athletic activities to stimulating group fitness classes and an exhaustive list of fitness programs and services.
