Mirroring the trends of the rest of the country, Eastern Montgomery County is experiencing an increase in its senior citizen population.
A great priority has been placed on ensuring the area’s seniors have access to ample programs and services designed to meet their needs. Independent and assisted living, long-term care, home health and supportive services are among the many options seniors have when it comes to residential living and wellness.
The Montgomery County Office of Aging and Adult Services is an integral agency on aging. The department was established with a mission to serve the county’s older and disabled adults and their families through a comprehensive system of services designed to prevent untimely institutionalization. The agency delivers such services as in-home care, senior center and adult living services, comprehensive assessments, care management, information/referral, caregiver support and more to over 40,000 Montgomery County residents annually.
The Eastern Region Collaborative Network works with local health and social service providers in order to address the specific needs of residents in the region, while the Visiting Nurse Association of Montgomery County supplies a wealth of home care services geared toward vulnerable elderly and disabled adults and their families. Among these options are personal care assistance, homemaker services, respite care, companion services, case management and specialist programs.
Independent and assisted living campuses are conveniently located throughout Montgomery County for seniors needing extra care 24/7. Prominent senior living facilities in the area include Presby’s Inspired Life’s Rydal Park, Brandywine Senior Living’s Dresher Estates and Sunrise Assisted Living’s Sunrise of Abington. Rydal Park recently opened the luxurious Parkside complex in spring 2008, which offers 45 spacious apartments for senior living.
Those not ready for residency at a senior care facility can take advantage of offerings through adult day care.
The idea behind adult day care is to welcome seniors into a supervised environment promoting recreation and wellness through a number of health-related services. Facilities such as SarahCare of Jenkintown and the Mid Atlantic Older Adult Daily Living Center of Glenside provide an alternative facility to nursing home care so that seniors can remain at home, while also supplying respite for their caregivers.
