Lighting the Path

Students, parents and residents of Upper Bucks are fortunate to have an excellent school system that produces productive, educated adults for the workforce. The two public school systems servicing Upper Bucks, Palisades and Quakertown Community School District, have been a success largely because of its talented teachers and administrators. One such administrator, former superintendent Francis Barnes, was elected as Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Education, proving that some of the best educators in the state are molding the minds of Upper Bucks children.

The Palisades School District schools are consistently ranked among the best in the state. These schools work hard in tandem with parents and the rest of the community to teach students to think critically, work creatively, respect the diversity of others and set positive goals. The Quakertown Community School District sets very high standards for students and works tirelessly to help them achieve them. These schools have cutting-edge educational technology, remedial programs for struggling students, enrichment programs for gifted students, and careful planning to make sure that students, teachers and taxpayers have the most efficient experience possible.

Public education facilities do not by any means exhaust the educational opportunities offered in Upper Bucks County. The Bucks County Intermediate Unit 22 provides computer classes and special education to 13 Bucks County School Districts. The Upper Bucks County Area Vocational Technical School is a great place for high schoolers and adults looking for technical training. For those looking for religious-based education, Lansdale Catholic High School, Faith Christian Academy, Quakertown Christian School and Upper Bucks Christian School allow students to gain knowledge while strengthening their faith.

There are also several non-traditional educational facilities in the area. Budding artists, actors and musicians should attend the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Performing Arts and hone their craft. For those who are sold on the unconventional yet thoughtful pedagogical philosophy of Waldorf schools, the River Valley School is the only one of its kind in the entire county. Choctaw Ridge Academy gives individualized education and attention to disruptive children, helping them achieve their behavioral and academic potential.

graduation

Learning certainly does not have to end after high school in Upper Bucks County. With three campuses in the area, Bucks County Community College is a convenient, affordable way to prepare for a career or a four-year degree. The school offers two-years worth of college level classes, which many use as a springboard to succeed at a four-year institution. DeSales University recently won accolades from U.S. News and World Reports as one of the best small liberal arts schools in the northern United States. The Roman Catholic institution has the advantage of small class sizes and individual attention for students. Similar advantages are offered by Cedar Crest College in Allentown, which enrolls over 1,400 students from 27 states and 20 countries. Interested in a school steeped in tradition? Check out Moravian College, the sixth-oldest college in the United States. Last but not least is Lehigh University, the largest area college with over 6,500 students, a diverse, high-caliber student body and a picturesque, 1,600-acre wooded campus.

At any educational level, Upper Bucks area schools, colleges and universities are a tremendous asset in preparing student for what lies ahead.
