graphicSchuylkill County’s rich heritage of art and ethnic culture has enriched thousands of citizens who have grown up and shared their traditions with even more thousands of families, friends and neighbors.

Dozens of clubs and organizations are involved in continuing the ethnic traditions of Schuylkill County. Each Schuylkill County community has a tradition of its own. In Shenandoah, it was the Dorsey Brothers, Tommy and Jimmy and their big band beginnings. In Tower City, it was more of the same with Les Brown, founder of the Les Brown Band of Renown. In Pottsville it was the jazz mastery of Alan Jaffee of Preservation Hall fame. The list is unending, as is its impact on the appreciation for art and culture in Schuylkill County.

Shopping in Schuylkill County is available in many locales. Strip malls and specialty shops are sprinkled throughout the shopping districts. Many of the local shopping districts represent historic downtown areas that are being revitalized to improve shopping opportunities in the local community.

Three major malls are located in Frackville, Pottsville and Cressona with both national and regional department stores as anchors. They feature restaurants and entertainment opportunities such as movie theaters and game rooms.

An emerging antiques market is also being created within the county’s shopping areas. With the wealth of history that has occurred right here in the regional community, consumers are finding that great opportunities are available in this unique shopping region.

With the county’s large agricultural base, roadside farm markets are another shopping feature that Schuylkill Countians enjoy. Fresh vegetables and produce are common features that are abundant during the county growing season.

Many religious beliefs are represented in the Schuylkill County population, and the rich ethnic traditions that are present in the county add to the quality of life and diversity of the Schuylkill experience. The traditional values that make Schuylkill County such a unique community in today’s America started generations ago when the first settlers arrived here and brought with them a strong religious commitment which continues today.
