Northampton County is governed under the Home Rule Charter, which provides for a nine-member elected legislative body and an elected county executive. Northampton County consists of 38 municipalities — two cities, 19 boroughs and 17 townships. Easton has been the county seat since 1752.

The City of Easton has a "strong mayor" form of government. A mayor and five City Council members are elected.

Individual communities and boroughs are governed by an elected Borough Council. Each township is governed by its own Board of Supervisors.

Public safety services are provided by a number of individual Fire and Police Departments. Easton has its own professional Fire Department; other communities in the area are served by volunteer firefighters. Emergency service in all areas is

available through the 911 system.
