Music, dance and drama hold a revered place in Wayne County residents’ priorities. That’s why volunteer groups like The Ritz Company Players find all the applause they need to make the long rehearsals worth it. The Ritz Company Players, housed in a grand movie house built for the Commerford theater chain in the early 1930s, have provided continuous live theater during summers and winter holidays for 31 years, producing more than 160 full-length productions — from Broadway musicals, historical dramas and light comedies to original children’s holiday stories. In the case of Broadway musicals, student musicians work side by side with retired professional musicians who donate their time to these performances.

Likewise, the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary at White Mills hosts six to eight concerts as part of its Summer Wildflower Festival, giving audiences a taste of everything from jazz to opera at its natural amphitheater. And the Northeast Philharmonic Orchestra and Broadway Theater of Northeast Pennsylvania offer year-round performances.

The Wayne County Creative Arts Council hosts weekly American and ethnic dance performances in Honesdale’s Central Park each summer, while art galleries throughout the area feed people’s hunger for visual arts, ranging from painting to sculpture. The largest sacred icon collection, at St. Tikhon’s Icon Repository in South Cannan, is available by appointment.

The Wayne County Historical Society Museum and the Equinunk Historical Society each operate museums to bring yesterday’s lifestyles of the area alive in the 21st century. The Dorflinger Glass Museum offers visitors an unusual glimpse into the art of glass making, along with collections from the manufacturer’s famous line produced more than a century ago
