When it comes to protecting our citizens, the communities in Wayne County put their money where their mouth is. Honesdale, Hawley and Waymart boroughs and Dreher Townships hire their own police forces; the rest of the county falls under the Pennsylvania State Police district. Nineteen volunteer fire departments ensure every home in the area comes under an emergency service umbrella. The Emergency Management Department coordinates efforts to avoid redundancies or errors.

Three elected county commissioners oversee the county’s development. Citizens also elect the county’s auditors, a Court of Common Pleas judge, district attorney, district magistrate, prothonotary, a recorder of deeds, a register of wills, a sheriff and treasurer.
