The city and county maintain a consolidated recreation department to allow coordination of resources to its greatest extent. There are programs offered by the recreation department for residents of all interests and all ages, from pre-schoolers to seniors.

Hunting and fishing are popular. A number of private and public facilities are available for golf, swimming and tennis.

Our communities’ numerous festivals include, Society Hill’s Catfish Festival, Darlington’s Sweet Potato Festival and more - none of which you’ll want to miss!

Our county library, conveniently located in Darlington, offers a great selection of materials for adults, youth, business and industry. Society Hill Library is one of the oldest lending libraries in South Carolina. A beautiful mural painted by "Blue Sky" was unveiled in 1985 in Darlington which still today lends its beauty to our community and all who visit.

Our county has more than 11,000 students enrolled in 22 schools in the Greater Darlington area, all accredited by the South Carolina Association of Colleges & Schools and the South Carolina Department of Education. Students enrolled at the Mayo Magnet School for Math, Science and Technology consistently score among the highest in the state on SAT tests.

Opportunities for higher/continued education are available locally at the applied technology centers at the Hartsville High School and Darlington High School; as well as Coker College in Hartsville; and Florence-Darlington Technical College and Francis Marion University in Florence.

Wilson Medical Center in Darlington was purchased by McLeod Hospital and has grown and expanded not only its expert staff, but also its facility - with the addition of a new 9,000-square-foot wing, as well as a new Emergency Medical Service Center.

Numerous physicians and dentists maintain independent offices in the Greater Darlington area.

CareSouth Carolina, Inc., located in Society Hill, was recognized for its new $1.4 million facility with the "Community Pride " award. Several nursing and convalescent centers are located in and around the Greater Darlington area, providing quality, compassionate care.
