Spartanburg County is steeped in a proud history. The area known as Spartanburg County was formed in 1730 when a treaty marking the boundary between the province of South Carolina and the Cherokee Nation was signed. Today, the boundary separates Spartanburg and Greenville counties. Settlers included Scotch-Irish families from North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, as well as Indian traders and ranchers. The county and the city are named for a regiment of soldiers, the "Spartan Rifles," who teamed with General Daniel Morgans troops to defeat the British in the Battle of Cowpens. The battle, recognized as the turning point of the Revolutionary War, is commemorated at the Cowpens National Battlefield. Today, Spartanburg County is proud to be an internationally recognized business and cultural center, boasting the highest per capita international investment in the country, according to The New York Times. Newcomers to Spartanburgs business community find cooperative governmental bodies working with local business leaders to facilitate industrial expansion and relocation to the area. The business sector works hand-in-hand with private citizens to foster conscientious growth and development. Spartanburg Countys international business community, with more than 100 foreign firms representing 20 countries, has provided a cosmopolitan atmosphere that mixes familiar Southern culture and hospitality with the culture and traditions of other countries. More than 2,000 Germans and Swiss make their homes in Spartanburg, as do hundreds of others representing such international diversity as Asia, Russia and Korea. The amenities and opportunities Spartanburg County offers are wide-ranging housing, education, healthcare, shopping, recreation, and culture are all of the ingredients that go into making this community a wonderful place to live. As a matter of fact, Money magazine has called Spartanburg one of "Four Booming Locales Where You Can Find a Job and Live Easy."
