Community Services include a 61-bed acute care hospital, two medical clinics with about 25 physicians, 30 places of worship, a country club, a public golf course, municipal pool and water park (in 2006), tennis courts, a civic center (Swiftel Center), a double ice arena, and nearby lakes, rivers and hunting.
The Brookings Register publishes Monday to Saturday. There are five local radio stations. Cable and satellite service are available, and four televisions stations can be received.
Visitor attractions include South Dakota State University’s McCrory Gardens, the South Dakota Art Museum and Agricultural Heritage Museum, Oakwood Lakes State Park, SDSU’s Hobo Day Homecoming, the annual Brookings Summer Art Festival (2nd weekend in July), and yearly tours of South Dakota State University, as well as a wide variety of Division I athletic events and cultural offerings.
South Dakota State University has approximately11,000 students. There are three public elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. Vocational and adult education programs are offered by East Central Multi-District, a consortium of area school districts.
