Burleson Location and Transportation

Influence on the Railroads

map

It is likely that the location of the town of Burleson was encouraged by an abundant water supply, available in nearby streams, which could be used to supply the steam engine locomotives. In addition, an abundant wood supply from the Cross Timbers forest area was an available fuel source needed to fire the tender boxes.

The Missouri-Kansas and Texas (MKT or Katy) Railroad provided passenger services to and from Burleson and central Texas. The railroad depot, which was demolished in later years, was located in the Old Town area. With the change from steam to diesel-powered locomotives and the loss of the depot, Burleson is no longer dependent upon railroad activities as a major economic resource. However, Burleson can rightly give a major share of the credit for its origination and growth to the old Katy Railroad.

Burleson is located 12 miles south of downtown Fort Worth and approximately 35 miles southwest of Dallas. Burleson lies in both Tarrant and Johnson Counties. Its location, relative to the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, allows Burleson to retain its distinct personality while still being a valuable part of the Metroplex.

Burleson is strategically located along Interstate 35W and State Highway 174. These two highways make access to Burleson an easy trip for shoppers and an excellent shipping point for manufactured products. Both Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail lines run through Burleson.

In addition to excellent road and railway transportation, Burleson also offers easy access to airline service. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is within a 40-minute drive and Alliance Airport is a 30-minute drive from Burleson. Spinks Airport is at the north entrance of Burleson.
