Economic Development

What was once a bedroom community adjacent to Fort Worth, Burleson is now one of the fastest-growing cities in the DFW Metroplex. It took 94 years for the City of Burleson to reach $1 billion in property valuations. However, it only took six years to raise it to $2 billion.

The extraordinary growth the City of Burleson has experienced has made it one of the fastest-growing communities in the area. The city has truly seen a population explosion in recent years, growing by more than 58 percent since the year 2000. It is projected that the city will continue to grow, with more than 10 square miles of developable land within the City limits, as well as an expansive extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) bringing great opportunities for businesses to locate or expand in the Burleson area. Some of the economic growth can be attributed to the low property tax environment Burleson offers you. Not only has Burleson experienced staggering growth in recent years, Johnson and Tarrant counties have also seen a 19 percent increase in population since 2000.

With a population of more than six million, the Metroplex is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the U.S. The Metroplex alone generates 33 percent of Texas’ gross domestic product, 29 percent of all retail sales, and 28 percent of Texas jobs, while only including 3 percent of the land in Texas. The region is home to 25 headquarters of Fortune 500 companies and is considered the second-largest high-tech economy behind Silicon Valley. The economic possibilities this area offers are endless.

Why is the face of Burleson changing so rapidly? Part of the equation has to do with the strong economic environment of Texas and, more specifically, the Metroplex. Texas is ranked as the No. 2 state in the U.S. for corporate relocations, and the Metroplex is also No. 2 as an area among hundreds of regions. CEOs and executives recognize the cost of living is low, the area is home to the state’s largest and most educated workforce, and quality of living is outstanding. It also doesn’t hurt that the region has no personal or corporate income tax.

The face of Burleson is changing rapidly. Nothing is more noticeable than the more than 4,400 new homes that have been built between 1999 and 2008. With an additional 30,000 people and 10,000 jobs expected to come to Burleson over the next 20 years, there are many reasons to be excited. New buildings, new businesses and new people are continually renewing and reinventing our energetic, successful city.

In response to these changes, the City of Burleson designed a comprehensive plan titled, “Imagine Burleson: A Road Map to 2030.” This comprehensive plan for the City is a key element in helping Burleson become an even more successful, vibrant place to live, work and visit. Imagine Burleson focuses on changes happening to the community and the potential for strong economic growth. The plan builds on previous strategies and practices to create a comprehensive plan that honors Burleson’s rich history, while preparing for high quality and sustainable development. At the heart of Burleson’s economic future is Burleson’s past. Burleson’s historic Old Town district has been revitalized and now offers wonderful entertainment and business opportunities for you to enjoy. Old Town holds historical significance to the community, symbolizing Burleson’s hometown feeling. In 2005, the city established an overlay district for this area. The overlay emphasizes preservation of neighborhood character, while encouraging improvement of the district by way of streetscape and building design. Only a short 15-minute drive from the busy city life of downtown Fort Worth, Burleson’s Old Town maintains itself as a safe, family-oriented community. The entire Old Town area is within the Tax Increment Financing District #2. Recent new development in the area includes commercial and residential rehabilitation, as well as multimillion dollar projects like B&G, the renovation of Community Bank and the Academy at Nola Dunn.

Abundant recreational opportunities are waiting for you in Burleson. These include more than a dozen city parks, a weekly farmer’s market, and what the Dallas Business Journal has voted in the “top five public golf courses in the state,” Hidden Creek Golf Course. All of this is less than a 45-minute drive from DFW Airport.

Burleson boasts an extremely active and thriving Chamber of Commerce. The Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) plays host to a bevy of entertaining events designed to showcase its members and the local community. These include an annual Golf Tournament, a spectacular Gala, the showcasing of local flavors at the Taste of Burleson, the popular Honey Tour Bike Ride and more. The BACC works with the City of Burleson and local organizations to help promote community events that include: Burleson’s Founder’s Day celebration, Boo Bash for Halloween, Cinco de Mayo and parades for 4th of July and Christmas. Additionally, the Chamber offers numerous business-building events. These include quarterly luncheons, an annual community member awards dinner, and monthly after hours mixers, just to name a few. Chamber events showcase the thriving business environment the City of Burleson has to offer and provide exceptional networking opportunities for area businesses. As a member of the BACC, you are offered unique marketing and promotional opportunities through a variety of communication outlets.

The DFW Metroplex is home to more than 25 universities and community colleges. Among the colleges are Texas Wesleyan University and Hill College; each of which has campuses located in Burleson. Texas Wesleyan maintains a 12:1 student to faculty ratio and offers an extensive variety of educational opportunities ranging from business to computer science. Texas Wesleyan is recognized as one of the top private schools in the state and offers fantastic student life, athletics, education and post graduation opportunities. Hill College focuses on providing a comprehensive community college experience for you. These are just a sampling of the educational possibilities available to you in and around Burleson.

Another key element to the economic development of the Burleson area is the IH-35 Corridor Plan. IH-35W traverses through Burleson for more than 10 miles. IH-35W is the NAFTA Superhighway, beginning in Laredo and traveling north to Minnesota. The City has created a Corridor Plan and Overlay District meant to spur economic development of this vital asset with new retail, employment centers and commercial offices.

In an effort to spur employment growth and development within the City, 160 acres of land was purchased. The result was the creation of HighPoint Business Park of Burleson. In 2010, the City and its 4A Corporation will begin construction of significant road improvements, a regional storm water detention facility, and necessary public infrastructure, creating shovel-ready and build-to-suit sites adjacent to IH-35W. QuikTrip Corporation has already agreed to construct a 120,000-square-foot logistics and distribution facility at this location. Multiple sites will be available soon.

Whatever your business, social or educational needs, the City of Burleson has opportunities for you. With an economy supported by gas and oil exploration, a thriving business base and a “hometown” quality of life, Burleson, Texas truly represents “The Good Life.” Whether you open a new business, expand an existing one, raise your family or just visit, let us be the first to thank you for being a part of the Burleson community.
