City of Burleson Government Overview: The town of Burleson was founded in 1881. The official incorporation as a town came in 1912. Burleson was made a city in 1938, and adopted a Home Rule Charter as a council-manager government in 1969. As established in 1969, the Mayor and Council comprise the legislative branch of the city government. The Council acts on ordinances and resolutions, approves the annual tax rate and operating budget, and generally makes policy for the overall operation of the City.

Since 1969, the position of City Manager has served as the chief administrative official of the City and is responsible for the overall operation of the City Administration.

City Manager/City Council: The City of Burleson operates under the Council-Manager form of government. The City Council appoints the city manager, who is the chief executive officer and head of the administrative branch of the city government. (S)he is responsible to the city council for the proper administration of all city affairs. The city manager and deputy city managers work closely with the City Council and the department directors to ensure the highest quality of life to the residents and businesses of Burleson.

The Burleson City Council meets every first and third Monday at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, located in the City Hall at 141 W. Renfro Street. Citizens and interested persons are also able to view archived City Council meetings online at www.burlesontx.com. Citizens wishing to address the council during a city council meeting may do so by appearing at a council meeting and completing a card requesting time to speak during the “Citizens' Input" portion of every regular council meeting.

City Secretary: The City Secretary's office records, certifies, preserves, manages and makes accessible sufficient information to ensure continuity in government and the documented accountability of City of Burleson policies, functions, and transactions in order to protect both the legal and financial rights of its citizens. The City Secretary's office also provides information to the public and helps the public locate government information maintained by and for the City in accordance with requirements established by law and by City Charter.

Economic Development Department: The City of Burleson is committed to being a helpful and enthusiastic partner in the private development process. The recent creation of this new department is meant to improve the way development-related services are provided in Burleson. The Economic Development Department is designed to be more responsive to customers and more effective and efficient in internal communications. The Community and Economic Development Department is structured so a person wanting to build in Burleson can conduct business under the leadership of an energetic staff and the city manager’s office. The goal of this department is to provide high-quality customer service and ensure the long-term economic success of the city.
