Commercial development in DeSoto has remained strong and steady in recent years. However, the city has particularly experienced an abundance of activity in the hotel business. Newly built and/or planned hotels include the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites at Wintergreen and I-35E, the Hampton Inn & Suites at Centre Park Blvd and I-35E, and the LaQuinta Inn & Suites south of Pleasant Run Road on the west frontage road of I-35E. Additionally, the former Holiday Inn at I-35E and Wintergreen was purchased by a firm out of Odessa and is going through over $2 million of extensive renovations while becoming the MCM Grandé Hotel / Fundome.
Other key commercial development projects include a potential new retail power center south of Belt Line Road on I-35E, a recently completed shopping center and grand entrance into the city on the southwest corner of I-35E, a planned 37,000 to 60,000 square foot shopping plaza adjacent to the Wal-Mart on Beltline, a potential mixed-use development at Wintergreen and Cockrell Hill, and the planned Trammel Crow High Street Residential mixed-use project at City Hall.
Significant growth is also taking place in the city’s medical area. Quorum Equities Group, LLC is developing a $40 million medical office park at US Hwy 67 and Wheatland Road by Methodist Charlton Medical Center. At full build-out, this multi-phase development will include a long-term acute care hospital, a medical office building, medical office condos, and commercial pad sites which will, in the near future, house an extended-stay Towne Place Suites by Marriott, restaurants and other commercial service facilities.
