East Texas cradles 70 percent of the 1.5 million acres of public fresh water in the state. Nine major lakes fall within a day’s drive of Henderson allowing year-round fishing and boating. The 5,000-acre lake at Martin Creek Lake State Park (15 miles northeast of Henderson) is stocked with black bass, perch, crappie and catfish. The 60 campsites at this location allow outdoorsmen to make the best of the opportunity.
For more organized play, the Rusk County Recreation Association steps up with a gymnasium, soccer, football, baseball and softball fields. Lakeforest Park’s 55 acres is the proposed site of the Henderson Civic Center.
Oak Hill Raceway sponsors motorcycle and go-kart races. This track hosts drivers on the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association, the Southwest Roadracing Association and SKUSA throughout the year.
