Lancaster offers a growing list of recreational opportunities to its residents and visitors.
A new $8 million recreation center was opened for completion in the summer of 2001, in conjunction with a 150-acre community park; in addition, a Texas Rangers/Royce Clayton Foundation/City of Lancaster funded little league baseball field is in early stages of development. The state-of-the-art recreation center offers a fitness area, aerobics/dance room, two gymnasiums, child care, tot activity area, multi-purpose classroom, activities lounge, youth room, banquet rooms, and caterers kitchen. The premiere feature is an indoor water park with leisure and lap pool, water slide, play structures, current river, zero depth entry and pool party area. And thats only the beginning. The community park will offer a full range of activities, including a bike-jogging trail with interpretative signs and footbridge, pond and fishing pier, amphitheater, picnic shelters with grills, multi-age level, accessible playgrounds, lighted youth football field, basketball court, sand volleyball court, athletic practice fields, and designated open spaces. At the site, visitors will be able to play hoops or sand volleyball, host a company picnic, enjoy an evening of amphitheater entertainment, enjoy various forms of exercise, or just stroll along the side of the pond. The Ten Mile Creek Preserve offers a 47-acre undeveloped nature park for hikers, fishermen and wildlife watchers. There are six neighborhood parks located throughout the city to serve the community. The Cedardale Softball Complex has three lighted fields, a full-size outdoor basketball court, a jogging/fitness trail, and a fenced playground. This complex plays host to some to the states biggest softball tournaments. Ten soccer fields are located at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex, a 20-acre park, developed in conjunction with Cedar Valley College. Joe Pool Lake is a 7,500-acre reservoir located west of the city for the watersport enthusiast. The Dallas Nature Center, with 630 acres of undeveloped land, is also just a short drive to the west. The area around Joe Pool Lake and the Nature Center offers a variety of relaxing settings for visitors to escape for a day or weekend. With close proximity to Dallas, Lancaster residents are only minutes away from the spectacular Dallas Zoo, one of the major zoological parks in the state.
