Lancaster has a city manager/City Council form of government. The city is governed by a 7-member City Council that includes six members elected from single-member districts and the mayor, who is elected by the entire city. The city’s Municipal Center houses several city departments and is the location of the City Council meetings.

Meeting the challenge on a daily basis is a city staff of 220 employees, forming the basis for one of the best-managed cities in Texas. City employees work in an organizational culture that is passionately committed to outstanding customer service, combining teamwork and creativity to provide a wide array of services.

The Lancaster Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency experiencing a renaissance. With a new command structure and expanded service delivery system, the department is embracing a philosophy of community-based policing and problem solving.

Personal safety and emergency management are top priorities of the 54-member Lancaster Fire Department. In addition to customary fire suppression activities, the department provides paramedic-level emergency medical services. Twenty-nine paramedics and 18 emergency medical technicians operate from three state-of-the-art Mobile Intensive Care Units. The department’s personnel are trained and equipped to provide assistance in times of need.
