historic chapel

LA LOMITA CHAPEL is a historic site listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and is located at a city park near the banks of the Rio Grande River. Built over a century ago by pioneering Oblates of Mary Immaculate, it was used as farm and ranch land, supporting the priests and their charities. It served as a rendezvous spot for the “Padres on Horseback” en route to Roma from Brownsville. The original chapel, built in 1865 has been rebuilt or restored at least two times. It was relocated at this present site in 1899. La Lomita means “little hill” in Spanish and is the namesake for the present city of Mission. (956) 585-2727

church

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE CHURCH at 620 Dunlap dates back to 1899. The original church was partially destroyed by fire in 1925. The statue of the Blessed Virgin that is on the outside front of the church was the only thing rescued from the fire. The church and rectory were built in 1926 and 1927. The church windows are of clerestory design with stained glass. Spiral fluted pillars support the steeple, dome and arched doorways. The priests of the Oblate of Mary Immaculate Order have always manned the church. (956) 585-2623
