Incorporated in 1960, the City of Live Oak is located at the strategic intersection of IH 35 and Loop 1604 in northeast Bexar County, 20 minutes from downtown San Antonio and other key destinations such as the La Cantera/Fiesta Texas tourism corridor and the hill country.
The City has a council-manager form of government. Live Oak is a full-service city providing fire, police, public works and other public services necessary to work toward orderly, progressive and high quality growth.
New population and housing growth has spurred the development of over 1,200 housing units by KB Home and Ryland Homes. Additionally, over 600 new apartment units were completed by The Heritage and The Springs apartment communities.
Live Oak now maintains two public parks. The Main Park encompasses 87 acres that include playgrounds, baseball, football and soccer fields, a 28-hole disc golf course, picnic areas with covered pavilions and a lake for fishing. The new Woodcrest Park encompasses 37 acres that also include playgrounds, picnic areas and walking trails. The Live Oak Municipal Pool is also a popular meeting place.
The Judson and Northeast ISD serve Live Oak. Now under construction is the new $125 million Northeast Lakeview College, a member of the Alamo Community Colleges, that is expected to serve over 15,000 students at its capacity. The Northeast Lakeview College purchased almost 250 acres and only plans to use about 50 acres.
A number of partnerships are under consideration by the college on the balance of the property. The first is a new $12 million Judson ISD Early College High School. Other educational partnerships include the development of a Multi-Institution Teaching Center (MITC) that could attract university programs from Texas Tech, Texas State and other state university systems.
Live Oak is realizing quality growth due to its growing industry clusters in healthcare, education, financial and retail services. Over $100 million has been invested by the healthcare industry.
The education sector is investing over $150 million. The retail sector will be investing over $200 million in the next five years, and the location of the Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union in Live Oak is serving to attract other financial service concerns to the city. The city plans to build and support these industry clusters for its future growth.
Of course, Live Oak already is realizing success from The Forum and Live Oak Crossing Shopping Centers that include major national retailers such as Target, The Home Depot, Best Buy, and Ashley Furniture. Restaurants include Outback Steakhouse, Red Robin, IHOP, Texas Roadhouse, Buffalo Wild Wings, Cold Stone Creamery and Mama’s Café.
Over 1.2 million customers come to the 18-screen Regal Cinema each year, and thousands attend events at the Live Oak Civic Center. Live Oak’s strategic location, effective community planning and proactive leadership have laid the foundation to move the city and region forward.
