Background
Universal City presents a diverse topography with gentle rolling hills and steep canyons enhancing the natural beauty of the area. This progressive city of 17,000, located in the northeast San Antonio suburbs, has grown from a small agricultural town of 1,800 in 1960 to one of the state’s leading municipalities. Universal City is located at the north gate of Randolph Air Force Base, which began operating in 1931 and was the first economic entity igniting the development of many others throughout the years. The city’s name reflects the “universal” importance of the air base.
Recreation
Universal City is home to a number of recreational facilities and numerous special events including parades and festivals with something for every age and every interest.
Universal City has six parks located throughout the City, operated and maintained by the Public Works General Services Division. The parks feature lighted softball and baseball fields, walking paths, pavilions, volleyball courts, playgrounds, picnic areas, tennis courts, basketball areas and a 1,500 square-foot clubhouse. A popular attraction is the full 18-hole disc golf course located in the Cibolo Creek Park and Natural Preserve area, challenging all levels of players with diverse types of terrain and settings.
In 2000, Universal City opened Olympia Hills Golf Course and Conference Center, a Finger, Dye, Spann Design Group design. The 18-hole course features dramatic elevation changes, some breathtaking holes and some of the largest, most picturesque live oaks in Bexar County.
Add to all this the sports, the symphony, museums, historical attractions, amusement parks and all the outdoor land and water recreation in the area, and you will see why Universal City provides such a vibrant venue for residents and visitors.
